What’s the Cost of Putting Wild-Caught Seafood on the Table? 650,000 Marine Mammals Killed or Injured Annually

Commercial Fishing Videos

Mrs.McGowen's Module 8 Notes:

Module Eight:  marine mammals, protecting dolphins; keystone species and sea otters in the kelp forest; global fisheries.

What to eat?  The National Audubon Society has created a chart called the Seafood Lover’s Guide, telling you what kinds of seafood are healthy to eat and which ones to avoid (due to things like health concerns  such as mercury contamination, or overfishing, etc.).  Go tohttp://seafood.audubon.org.

Book recommendations:  if you didn’t read it earlier, take a look at Alexandra Morton’s “Listening to Whales”, her story of her life spent researching killer whale communication.  Another great choice is Linda Greenlaw’s “The Hungry Ocean”, about her life as a fishing boat captain.   It ‘s the first book she wrote after being made famous by the “A Perfect Storm” book and movie.

Assignment 8.06:Kelp Lab
The point of this assignment is to introduce you to the amazing variety of processed items that contain extracts of algae in them.  Bet you never knew it was so useful , or so common!

Use the resource links to find out information about algae extracts. The resource link that I especially like is “The Seaweed  Site”.  Once you get there, look at the third paragraph down, Uses of Seaweed, where it talks about seaweed extracts. You’ll see things you can click on for more information.

The most common extracts are algin, carageenan and
agar. Make a note of which kind of seaweed each one comes from (red, brown or green).  Find out some of the most common products that contain algae extracts.
Once you’ve researched, it’s time to go on a scavenger hunt around your house! Look at product labels in your kitchen and bathroom.  Look for those extracts in the product’s ingredient list.  Make a list of 15 or more items that contain algal extracts. To complete the assignment, list your 15 products by name, say which extract it contains and which kind of algae that extract comes from. Then make up a dinner menu of algae-containing
 foods!

Assignment 8.09:  This is a really important topic, so take care and do a great job with this assignment. Some commercial fishing methods are actually harming the marine environment and causing drops in the populations of many popular marine species.

Time to prepare for the segment exam.
*Review Modules 5-8.
*Plan to attend the live segment review. They’re offered nightly, Monday-Thursday, at 8 p.m. sharp.  To log in, use the link on our class Announcements page.

Without changes in global fishing policies, the seafood of the future is rubbery. The jellyfish burger is so close to becoming a reality, we can taste it, according to digital artist Dave Beck and marine scientist Jennifer Jacquet who collaboratively created this 3D digital composited image.
